Bring French Style Into Your Home

Here we are already into the second week of UEFA Euro 2016 tournament, bringing the usual joy and frustration of being a football fan supporting the home nations. The competition is held every four years and this year is hosted by France. Matches are being played all over the country, including Paris, Marseille, Lille and Bordeaux.

Whether you are a football fan or a football widow, it can't be denied that France has had a huge influence over how we have furnished and decorated our homes.
French style has changed over the years but there are three basic styles of French furniture: Parisian furniture made in the capital city of Paris, Provincial furniture made in the country and Royal furniture made for the King and court.

Provincial style furniture tends to include cabriole legs (four supports with two curves each) and simple scalloped carving.

Parisian furniture tends to be highly decorative and featured the styles and fashion of the time. Royal styles are named after the different kings and as such, the style varied from one king to another.
French Royal furniture was comprised of the finest materials and was of the highest quality.

Today, French styling can be found in our bedrooms, living rooms and bathrooms, and we’ve picked out some of the most beautiful pieces you can use to bring a sense of timeless elegance into our home.

In the bedroom, opt for crisp clean walls, complimented with a beautifully dressed bed. Pile up pillows encased in Broderie Anglais and layer the bed with lace and soft throws. Add drama with an ornate headboard and keep the floor simple with a neutral colour rug next to the bed. If space permits, a chaise longue adds a touch of class to any bedroom.

The bathroom is the ideal room to display beautiful soaps and perfume bottles. Be on the lookout for apothecary jars which will make any bath product look special.

Prop gilt-framed mirrors against the living room wall for an informal feel and mix and match your furniture to include comfortable arm chairs with a classic occasional chair. Add lots of soft furnishings such as beautifully embroidered or simple pale cushions and throws.

Embrace the country style in the kitchen by keeping the walls a neutral colour and make the dining table the focus of the room with a beautiful cream linen table runner. Dress shelves with your favourite crockery and display fresh herbs in clay or wooden pots on the windowsill.
